A patch is a small file that can do one of several things for the game, it can make pal games work on ntsc tvs, it can make the game protection bypass, ect ect. A rip is when you take a game that it to big for a regular cd (such as a dvd game) and cut some things out of it (such as movies, or you can even tone it down) and then make it to where it wil fit on a regular cd-r.
