Playing PSX Backups

Ok, i read somewhere on here that playing PSX backups was as simple as turning of the ps2 for 5 seconds then turning it back on. Does this actually work? If it does can you play from isos burned off the internet? I would get a chip since the warranty has expired but i don't have the money nor knowledge to buy and install a modchip.
