A new PS2 system to be released in Japan this year and next year for US and EUR, called PSX, not only allows you to play your PS2 games but it also comes with a TV tuner, DVD recording capability, a 120 gigabyte hard disk, USB 2.0 and memory stick support and a built-in Ethernet adapter. Sounds like a percursor to the PS3. Has many of the same capabilities as the PS3 is supposed to have without the addition of new games and much of the new technology. My only question is when are we going to see a chip?

You will probably see a chip for it within a VERY short time.....

Once the machine is in the hands of the teams.....

You know the way they are.... Get the machine, have a chip for it VERY quickly...

You've got to LOVE them.......

I do not know about other places but on the Gamecube forum here no one even knows how to copy the game. Hard to test a chip if you don't have a game to do it with.

Well, from what I hear the GC disc is non-standard. My DVD drive on my PC doesn't even know that there's a disc in there, so I'm inclined to believe that Nintendo has done something to the disc.

The PS2, on the other hand, uses DVD's. With the exception of the protection (which nobody has ever actually pinned down) "track", it's just an ordinary DVD.

XBox DVD's are "encrypted", but they are still ordinary DVD's.

But it's VERY hard to crack a protection for a game that you can't even read.

X-box DVD's wont read in a standard DVD drive either, but thanks to some einstein type genius somewhere, we can use evo-x & flash ftp (how they worked that one out I'll never know).

They expect the same will have to be done with Gamecube games as Xbox. I hear that their was one team that managed to tap into the Gamecube's internal circuitry and create a game image from their but it was not any standard way a home user could put to use. Then there is still the second part of actually creating a chip to boot the games. If demand for it is high enough we may see Gamecube backups in the future, but I am not going to hold my breathe.

I think you have got it EXACLTY right.....

The Gamecube DEMAND is no where near that of the PS2 & X-box...

Its VERY simple.....

A HUMAN designed all of the systems...... There is a human that can break it.....

BUT.... If the DEMAND is not there.... Then why mess with it???

definitely, nintendo does know how to do copy protection and without a demand to mod a system why bother? Nintendo is so over-protective that it sometimes scares away developers from working on the system cuz they have to purchase the exclusive media format (those mini disk things and the cartriages of the past) so it's more money loss. But Hey with such good off the bat protection who would want to bother modding it in the first place?

Actually those mini discs are just small DVDs. They are not all that common but they can be found and may not be as cheap as many regular DVDR brands but are not all that expensive.
