Do backups effect the PS2?

Does playing backs up on the PS2 ware on the laser; or have any other negative effects on the machine? I think I noticed that games load a little slower (not positive) and the system seems to make a little more noise (once again not positive--hard to tell). Also, is it better to play with the console verticle or horizontal? Thanks.

evern if you play original
your lasers get hurt
because you use it..

but yes backups wares your laser
more than original games..
about the loading.. mmm
i havent notice it..

and for the noice..
mmm
depends on the media..
if you use quality media like verbatim or ritek
you will be ok..

Backups if done on the correct medias, (CD-R for CD, DVD-R for DVD etc...) will wear your laser NO MORE than the originals will.

If your games are loading slower then it will be a media problem (Not correct type, inferior quality etc...) and the same goes for the noise. Use Ritek quality media (Traxdata, Datasafe etc...) for DVD and the same for the CD. Verbatim are also a very good choice if you can afford them (I have just started to use the Verbatim CD-R and it is quieter than my CD originals). Their DVD-R is very good also.

Standing the console vertically is BETTER for the console as the laser can gain the correct pitch on the disc (it won't too close or too far away) which will also help your loading times. Gravity then can't act on the laser so yes, standing vertically IS better than horizontal. Been a member since February 2002, seen and answered many of these questions before...

Hope this helps...

I'm using Memorex CD-r's. How bad are those in terms of this topic?

There are better on the market. Memorex is a bit of a hit and miss type of media. Some have good results and some have bad. Usually newer consoles don't have a problem but older ones can result in problems. In future try and use some type of Ritek Dye media, e.g.: Traxdata/Datasafe (V. Cheap, V.Reliable)/Ritek etc... That should help you...

lufcfan,
Just a question... I can't argue with you about the vertical position being better for the PS2 laser because I don't have the knowledge of how the laser functions. However, I play my console horizontally because I thought that it was better for the tray(during the eject). On consoles that I have left it vertical the eject seems to be a little jerky and not as smooth. Maybe you could shine some light on this.

Basically the tray is not affected by the way in which the PS2 stands, however I do know what you mean. You are right in the way that the tray is smoother horizontally but it cannot harm the tray in any way, shape or form however the laser can be damaged or damage a disc etc, etc... so I would stand mine up vertically rather than horizontally. The reason for the tray seeming smoother horizontally is because the motor is mounted in transverse (the opposite way round to it's normal operating position) when stood vertically.

Hope this helps...

I'm not sure backups wear down the laser any more than leaving the light on in the room when you were reading can damage your eyes.

It's a very rough analogy but true. I worked out once that on average PS2 backup use of 4 hours/day, backups would lessen the life of the laser by around 2 weeks in a two year life.
