Ps2 Network Adapter

If I buy a Ps2 network adapter and connect it to my cable modem do I need to pay a monthly service to play ps2 games?

Or can I just link up with other ps2 gamers for no extra cost to me?

There is no fee to play ps2 online. Some games might require you to pay a monthly fee though.
