To route or not to route

I have seen multiple posts concerning the use of routers or hubs to connect the PC to the XBOX. Has anyone had any luck with a straight PC to XBOX connection? If not what is the recpmmended method, router or hub? Thanks

my xbox's are connected directley to my pc's nic card using a cross over cable works perfectley.

system 1
i use windows xp pro
evox 1.8.458
flash fxp 2.0 build 908

system 2
windows me
evox 1.8.458
flash fxp 2.0 build 908

both connected to xbox's using cross over cable directley from xbox to pc'c nic card

Ok I guess I am a newbie. What is a cross over cable? Is it a standard LAN cable? What is it converting? Thanks

a straite cable is the type where all pins are identical wire for wire on each side.
i got my cable from pc world as part of a cheap £10.00 lan network kit.
if you look at the tip of the cable you will see both ends are wired differentley to each other. from opposite ends

1. UTP cabling has 8 wires inside the jacketing - 2 transmit and 2 receive - when connecting two devices directly you need these 4 wires to line up in the other devices jack oppositely so you switch their places on one end and a baby crossover is born!

2. generally, I think most would say "standard" refers to a straight cable

3. both cables carry data the same but the difference is just the arrangement of the wires

So a standard LAN cable is not the same as a crossover cable? Sounds like there is a pin position difference between the two.

i use a crossover cable (from fry's for 5 bucks) to connect directly to pc - i set my xbox ip to static, same with my pc -> works great
