Do I need the metal thing on the expansion bay?

The piece of plastic that attaches to the expansion bay has a metal thing on my friends ps2, mine doesn't. Do I actually need that piece to play online? I have a v7(39001) ps2

No. The v7 expansion bay cover is different from the early PS2's.

They are all plastic. No metal bracket.
