I think I might need a little help if you don't mind. I made the first
backup of San Francisco Rush just fine. But then I tried to update my Aspi layer to try and get CDRWIN to work with my new burner (it still doesn't but that's ok). Well I then tried to make some more backups and they didn't work at all. I then did the aspi check and saw that there was an error. So I found another update (for win95) and did that one, then I did the aspi check and it said everything was ok. But I still am having trouble burning. I deleted the old rips that I had done when the aspi was messed up and did new ones. The only one I have tried to burn so far is Tomb Raider I, which is supposed to have no protection, unlike II, III, and so on. (But it does have a demo of II on it so maybe this I was made after the release of II??) Now it has two demos on it that work fine, but when I choose the actual game, I have to wait 60 seconds for the screen to come up that asks if I want a new game or load a saved game. But after I choose nothing happens, no matter how long I wait. The disc spins for a few seconds then stops for one second and starts spinning again. It keeps doing this as long as you let it go. I even tried turning it upside down like some say do, but then nothing at all happens. I have tried it on 2 discs (Imation and Verbatim) and both do the same thing. The only thing I can think of is that the aspi update isn't ok even though it says it is. The aspi check is for Win95 and so was the update, but I'm running Win98. I guess I can try the newer update again that I got at Adaptec that aspi check gave an error to, but then where would I find aspicheck for Win98 to make sure it was ok and just not saying it wasn't because it's originally for Win95? I wish I could figure out how to install the originals I had in. Since I can't get CDRWIN to work anyway and CloneCD did just fine on them. OR .... I am not sure what to check in CloneCD. On the istructions I found it says to uncheck 'Wait until buffers are full' but it doesn't have that option, but it does have 'buffer underrun protection' and I leave that checked. And also I leave 'Amplify weak sectors' checked which there is no mention of in the instructions either. Maybe one or both of these is wrong? But I am pretty sure they were checked when I made the first successful backup of San Francisco Rush. |

CDRWIN VERSION?
Goto the goldenhawk website and get the version 3.9A that is listed with widest compatability--it will ask if you want it to update ASPI for you--click yes: http://www.goldenhawk.com/download.htm This also has some links for updating the ASPI manually, as well as a user guide.
It may actually be "ripping" the disc right, just not burning the backup properly. Make sure it is in DAO mode and none of the data is being manipulated/filtered/corrected in any way. Barring that, it may in fact be a media problem (unless you just got a weak laser). I have taken to burning my PSX's on 650MB Media, nothing certified higher than 24X. This will generally be a dense reflective layer, with minimal impedance from the dye layer. You may want to see if you can swap a few blanks with a friend if you can't get CDRWIN or CLONECD to work. As for the CloneCD, it has been the best way for me to go--use EXACTLY as listed in the previous reply--make sure you read and burn as slow as the drive will go. Not absolutely necessary all the time, but considering you are already having trouble....better to be safe than sorry. I would highly recommend CloneCD for the first try. I am using an older version simply because I don't like the newer skinned look. Even this older version burns them right on the first try 99% of the time. I don't want to discount CDRWIN, because it burns the few oddballs CloneCD doesn't get right. CloneCD just tends to be less difficult to use, and I can rip faster because it works better with my DVDROM as the reader (I don't have to swap the media, and each disc is ejected when it is through.) One nifty trick with the newer versions of CloneCD though is it will grab control of the drives BEFORE Winblows if you DON"T PUSH THE TRAY BACK IN--open the trays, lay the disc down, then click the Next/OK buttons and let CloneCD control the drive and it will step around some copy protection schemes better (supposedly--according to its author). Good Luck! Raist |

You might want to try killing the aspi layer before updating. Look for a program called ForceASPI 1.7
