Smile re: best os for games

ive used all those o/s's for games and find xp to work the best for these reasons (1). windows ME is a very unstable piece of crap, so its out. (2). 98 and xp are both very stable, but 98 dosen't come with a unzip program, and the downloads are slower than xp, hence problems with online games. i have cable dsl and get 150 kbs from 98 and 250 kbs with xp,thats without modding the registery. i also like to right click and extract with built in unzipper, found only on ME and XP. on a personal note i think winzip is a piece of crap, just my opinion.so id go with xp,and make sure you just get the upgrade, its no different than the full version, all you need is the install discs from a previous o/s. ive bought the full version of 98 and dont even use it, anyone want a cheap, priced to sell o/s? it cost 200 bucks (full version) make me an offer>jimd000********com c ya.. peace

Eagle is on a distinguished road
i have experienced 98SE as the most stable OS of the Windows-family. If you have quality hardware (mobo, graphic, rams etc.) and correctly installed windows, did windows-update and managed all driver-stuff then win98se will hardly ever crash.

As I always say: 'The biggest fault sits in front of the computer'

It depends

WinMe is no option as it is too unstable

Win98SE is the most compatible OS for now as it also will play games which were released before WinXP. There are a lot of games which simply do not work with WinXP (and for which are no updates available)

in WinXP it is possible to run a game (or anything else) in Win9x compatible mode but this usually does not fix certain problems

So the ultimate gaming machine should have a multiboot system to boot either Win98 or WinXP

I choose Linux over Winblowz.. cuz it blows windows away as far as rendering and such... but, since we speaking M$.. I'd tell ya to stick with XP. As for gaming goes, use FAT32 for your FS.. if you use NTFS.. for some odd reason NO EA Games, games will play. ALL my games play & run perfect on XP(FAT32). For the issue of XP d/ling slow, you can disable that. For further detail into XP, refer to xp-erience

Oh.. and for you monkeys =P http://www.ihatewindowsxp.com

Pfft EA just makes lame sports games now anyways. For any computer over 400MHz, XP is definitely the way to go IMHO (especially if you're willing to get into the guts and tweak it). Win98SE is my second choice though because it's fairly stable (but suffers from sitting on top of DOS 7 just like Win95 and WinME do).

WinXP seems to be happier with NTFS on my system, and it also lets me flag files as "compressed" so that XP will compress and uncompress them on the fly to save disk space (good for big files that you don't access to often).

EA Games = MoH:AA, C&C Renegade.. and uh.. that's all I can think of worth playing. So.. if you got those games, I suggest FAT32 for XP. Those are the only games I've had any trouble with on XP... no telling what else may have probs w/ NTFS.
Btw, I've had 0 problems w/ XP & GTA3 other than that damned render patch for Direct X 8.1... and some of my own human errors.
