Lite-On 24x - Whoops? (plus media question)

Well, I've had a Lite-On 24x since Christmas, and while it works great I thought I'd give it a shot on a copy of Star Ocean 2 that was getting a little scratched up and worn out. The original works fine in the PSX so that's not the problem.

The problem is that my backup CDs barely work. Load times are horrendous, and sometimes the game will 'freeze' as it can't read data from the CD. The game isn't really playable in this state.

My Lite-On won't burn any slower than 8x, which I've heard is bad ju-ju to attempt. The media I usually buy are Imation 24x CDs and/or TDK 24x/32x. I also use Nero 5.5, and use the settings indicated on GameCopyWorld. Is the burning speed what's killing me?

if you ask anyone they will tell you the same, burn no faster than 4x or you will be sacrificing something(graphics, sound ect.)and for nero to copy playstation games it sucks(that is what i think),use clonecd or cdrwin which are the best for this kind of stuff(they will only work if your burner is 100% compatable).you can download both of them here and also find the setting for them. http://www.psxcopyworld.co.uk

Hmm.

It sounds like I'm kinda stuck as far as my burner goes... well, thanks for hleping clear things up! I've actually got a (really crummy) old 2x burner that copied PSX okay, I might be able to pop that in sometime.

Are the CD-R disks I use okay (TDK 24x/32x, Imation 24x), or should I go with a different brand?

yes those disk are fine, who told you that you could not burn any slower that 8x.if your burner is compatable with cdrwin than download the demo and you will only be able to read and write at 1x which is perfect for playstation games.ps what is the model # of your burner.

Well, under Nero, it won't let me burn any slower than 8x. I haven't tried CDRWin yet (though I definately will soon). My model number is:

LTR-24102B

your burner is compatable with both clonecd and cdrwin,so you should not have any problems backing up your games as long as you use the rite settings which you can get here psx copy worldfollow them and happy playing

Ack! Sorry, haven't had a chance to test it yet. I was gonna try it today.

From what I've been reading though, I might be kinda stuck... everything I've read suggests that my CD-RW can burn NO SLOWER than 8x. Still, I'll give it a shot. And if that doesn't work, I've still got my old 2x burner that did pretty well on these kinds of burns. I could swap out my zip drive (which I never use) with that, and I'm in business. ^_^

Gah, no dice. x_x CDRWIN demo said it was burning at 1x but judging by the time it took to burn, it was much more like the otherwise reported minimum of 8x for this CDRW drive. Guess I'll try popping in my old burner.

EDIT: Just to see, I tested the game on my PSX. Same problem with load times. x_x

if your burner could not go that slow it would have said unable to set writing perimaters,so it was burning at 1x.about the load time it could because you laser in your playstation is getting bad.that is just a suggestion, well i guess you can try your old burner and see what happens

Nah, it was definately NOT burning at 1x. It only took like ten minutes--- 1x would have taken almost an hour. Oh well, I'll try messing with it later... I'm too frustrated with it right now... x_x Thanks for the help though!

same problem here

i really have the same problems -> same 24x Liteon Burner and a PSone. Burning with 1x would take max 74min for a full 650MB CD, so 25min is smth. like 4x.
Either you should find out the best media for your PSx or there is a way to adjust the cd-laser power within the PS1. I really wonder if this modification is possible - for various other system it works fine and fixes many of those CDR problems.

the liteoff will not write above 8x. but they are calibrated for high speed anyway so write at 12x-24x. also, imation cdrs are utter poo. they are CMC magnetics and are real shite. the tdk are alright but not very durable. they better not be tdk gold because those are also CMC magnetics.

@buzzon, you say it takes 15-25 minutes to burn @ 1x ? that sounds like you have a burner with a minimum speed of 4x. 1x takes longer than the actual cds running time. eg a 70 min game will take about 75minutes or more.
