Guide to Backing up Moh:AA

(Added note:if this has been posted anywhere else on the forums then I am a total ass and the_mist is right, read more of the forums!)

Ok, if you are like me and just wanted to back-up Moh:AA and are sick of reading posts that are off-topic and not helpful then this MIGHT be for you. All you need if the orignal Moh:AA (as you are making a legal back-up ) , winzip, the no-cd fix from gamecopyworld.com for the version you have, and a cd-burner with any cd-burning software (I used Nero). Ok, install the game (full). You will see this file is about 1.3 Gigs. 2 cds just happens to be 1.4 gigs. So pick half the files in the medal of honor folder (most of the megs exist in the main subfolder) and zip them up in a zip file called cd1. I used all the files besides the .pk3 files 1-6. (i included pak0.pk3 on this cd). Be sure when you are zipping that you include full path info otherwise unzipping would be a freaking mess. Now zip up the pak1.pk3 thru pak6.pk3. into a zip called cd2.zip. Also include that no-cd fix version from gcw.com somewhere on one of the cds. Now you should have 2 cds with 2 huge zip files (around 650 megs each). Now burn each zip to a cd with your software, (my cd2.zip was 714 megs according nero but when it put it on the cd it was 680 megs. probably due to the difference between file size and the file size on disk). Now you have two back-up cds.

Now say drop your orignal cds into the blender. Oh damn you are screwed... but wait you have your back-ups! Now un-zip both of the zip files... be sure to unzip to "C:\" (without quotes of course)(this will take a few minutes). This will make the folders in the right places as long as you included the full path info. Now rename the orignal .exe that came (maube to Mohaa.exe.bak) with the game and replace with the no-cd fix one downloaded from gcw.com (as in extract this file to the MOHAA folder). I am not sure if this is a legal copy, but it works... although I tried it on a computer which previously had a legal version on it so i am not too sure if the registry would have to be messed with, but I don't think so since I tried to delete all instances of Moh:AA in the registry. (Please tell me if this doesn't work on a computer that has never been touched by a legal version... I am trying it out tomorrow)

This way is much better if your cd-burner isn't good for making good copies. It takes time, but most of it is just watching the things zip and unzip. So you browse the web or watch TV at the same time.

I know this is a pretty ridculous method of doing things, but it works, and takes no knowledge of safedsic (by the way unsafedisc doesn't work on medal of honor : allied assault, atleast not version 2.4). I am a m8 (as the_mist refers to them) so if this post needs to be moved then thats fine with me... I have it saved so i can re-post anytime. E-mail me @ [email protected] if you have questionsabout this process, I am a n00b in this area of cd-copying so I probably won't be much help in anything else.

For more medal of honor downloads and news go to alliedassault.com or alliedassualt.net or planetmedalofhonor.com

Remember, if you are planning on updating you need to keep that orignal .exe file and re-naming it to the orignal name if when you update. As long as gcw.com keeps coming out with its kick ass no-cd fixes you should be in good shape.

Later.

a better way?

How else would you do it? I tried betablockers and it never patched the .img file... I tried that twice. The other way I read was using safedisc, which isn't correct if you are using 2.40. My cd-burner, a hp cd16f, doesn't support fast skip settings of error correction none or software, it always changes it to hardware. So what is the better way? And this way is faster is you are new because you don't have to waste your time looking through the boards and downloading a bunch of stuff that is poorly documented. Plus this will work for any game. I guess you could use blindwrite and blindread, but thats a long ass time to dump both cds, around 3 hours (according to blindwrite). So while this way may seem complicated, its really not. I just got done with Blindread/ BlindWrite and my back-up didn't work. The HP cd16f sucks at making back-ups!

I used Betablocker 2.51 to patch the images and burnt with my Plex 24X.

As you aren't having success with BB for whatever reason. All you would need to do is,

Copy CD1 to temp directory, add a folder named crack with the fixed exe in it

Do the same with CD 2 (well actaully, doing this for one cd would be sufficient)

Burn to disks

After installing from these disks, replace the original exe with the fixed one in the crack folder.

This isn't the ideal way to copy games as it is imperfect.

It is imperfect as it is not an exact 1:1 copy of the original.

Also - using BB isn't perfect as the image is modified.

right... but why does that matter (if it is imperfct)? I just wish the hp cd16f was better at backing things up... it would be so much easier!

Most people want to have their copy exactly as the original.

One example of it being an inconvienance is when you try to update the game, the updater checks to see if the main exe has been changed and if it has been changed it won't update.

right.. that is why i suggested that you name the real .exe to mohaa.exe.bak. and switch to mohaa.exe when updating. Then get the no-cd .exe from cgw.com after the update has been applied.
