patched games need modchip too?

I was playing around with patching a psx game (croc2) and the PS still says to "insert a playstation game" (PS5501). I still have not defeated my first psx game so please help! I am working on Croc 2 using cdrwin, and the pal4u, and pal2k. Do I need to have the mod chip and have the game patched?

the mod chip is so your psx can read cdr's and patching is for getting around the protection on the games mainly but you can patch for turn games from nstc to pal and vice-versa
