need safe label removal solvent - already ruined a DVD!

This is a touchy problem. I'm in the US, and I have DVD's with self-adhesive paper labels that are interfering with playback and must be removed.

We tried "Goo Gone" from www.magicamerican.com but it crazed the plastic horribly - I suspect the petroleum distillates did the damage.

Could anyone recommend a solvent that has PROVEN safe for the data layer and plastic but will remove the adhesive?

Sorry - this may not be exactly what you're looking for but there again it's wortha try..

You know those liquid-based cd cleaners? Could you "soak" the topside of the DVD, like a damp piece of kitchen tissue, so that it comes loose? Effectivily this wouldn't harm the underside of the disc at all.

Are you familiar with "RS" components? They sell a lot of cleaning solutions via their large catalogue, at a decent price.

perhaps they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Some of these companies shoudn't be allowed to manufacture such labels if they're gonna fail like this after a while..

I'd be interested to know if you have any luck with this non-abrasive method.

when my house caught fire, the insurance company told me to wash my cd's and dvd's (not cdr's or dvdr's) in warm soapy water, like u would do a plate, then let the disk dry on its own and simply plosh it up with a soft cotton cloth. cd/dvd are water proof u just have to be gental with them.
