out of the norm please help!!!!

ok i know this is a bit diff from whats normally here but i need ya help. ive region locked my dvd drive ive a compaq pc and the drive is stad alone ie no mpeg hardware card its done via software dvd genie wont work and reformating dont work does anyone have any new ideas other than buy a new drive
please help as is going mad i can only watch regio 1 disks and i wanna back up my region 2 disk as is allready scratched

you could try upgrading the firmware on your DVD rom to enable region free playback but beware upgrading with the wrong firmware can result in frazzled circuitry.
