I just bought a burner? Can someone just tell me what an iso is?

What exactly is an iso?

an iso is a CD image
and if u dont know what a cd image is its an
ideal copy of an original CD
such iso files are usually saved under .iso extensions
or .cue/.bin (CDRWIN program)
