ps2 mod-chip and boot cd

dose anyone know if ya can put a mod-chip in the ps2 so you can play the ps1 backed up games ???
and is there any word on the ps2 boot up disc
is and one geting close to cracking it ???
and when you can get the boot up disc are you going to have to use crackes and patches to backup ps2 cds ???
