Question DVD+R for PS2 Backup

AM planning on buying a DVD burner soon (and a PS2 - dont own one just yet!).

Although most ppl recommend a DVD-R, I would prefer a plus, coz I can use the drive like a hard disk. BUT, I have some important questions first!

1. Can I use this disk to read standard DVD-roms, ie the ones I get with magazines etc.

2. Can I use them to burn PS2 games?

3. If my mate has a DVD-R and I have a plus R, are we able to swap data easily?

Im not too worried about DVD-player compatibility, but if the answer is no to any of the above, I may have to go for the Buffalo DVD+- recorder as its the only cheap one that can do both.
Any info on this drive?

Also, FYI I am now living in Japan....although the DVD- disks ARE cheaper than the + ones, the difference is very small.

Thanks for the help in advance! Joules

Joules, I don't have an answer for you but I would like to re-post the question. I have been browsing the discussion forums for a couple of hours now looking for the answer. I have an HP DVD200E which uses the DVD+r and DVD+rw media. Can anyone say definitively whether or not PS2 games can be backed up on DVD+R and or DVD+RW media? Since I already have the burner and a PS2 I would like to backup some of my games but I don't want to spend the money on a mod chip only to find out that you can't use the +r or +rw media. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes.... You can use the +R/+RW format for PS2 backups AS LONG as you have a V5 or higher PS2....

I have the first US Playstation 2 version released, and it plays DVD+R discs fine. It won't play the +RW discs though. I've had good success with memorex branded discs.

This is a VERY RARE thing..... Usually (99%) only the V5 or higher will play these types of discs with good success.....My V5 will play anything I put in it (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW).....

Consider yourself lucky, as you are one of the few that have a earlier version that they will work in....
