Newbie ----> play import-games on mod ps2, please help.....

some weeks ago, i installed the neo 2.2 on my pal ps2. i use it with the dvd region x - codefree.

in the last days i ordererd the original us-ntsc version of metal gear solid 2: sons of liberty.

until yesterday i believed that i would be able to play the us version on my mod ps2.

a friend of mine told me, that it is not possible to play any ntsc original on a mod pal ps2.

now i am not sure what i should believe and what not.
i am going mad.

can someone tell me if it is possible to play the original mgs2 us-ntsc version on my mod pal ps2 or not.
and if it is possible could you tell me how i boot the game.

thanx to everyone who helps me.

Amazing. It's like you just told my story from a few days ago!
I also bought a PS2 PAL and Orderd Metal Gear Solid 2 from the US, and then went mad when I started hearing that it might not be possible to play it.
Well, I have some good news... And some bad ones...
The guy who installed my chip explained everything to me leaving me more or less knowledgable, so here it goes:

First the bad news - Currently, you can't play original NTSC imports on a PAL PS2. Don't even think about installing the NEO4, because it still has many issues and problems you DON'T want to face, and it probably won't boot your NTSC games anyway.

Now for the good news! You are lucky to have a PAL PS2 and not an NTSC PS2 for the following reasons:
1>You can play backups of NTSC games PATCHED to PAL, so in any case, you will be able to backup your game properly into a "PAL" version and play it.
2>Currently, the NTSC PS2 is not capable of Playing any region of DVD, while yours can!!!!!

So in conclusion, you can enjoy all the worlds with the current Mod Chip, while NTSC PS2 can't! So don't worry! When you get Metal Gear Solid 2, just start reading some instructions, and BURN BABY,BURN!

This is more complicated then I thought myself, but I guess it's be worth it when FFX comes out.
Anyway, I was surprised to find out just a few minutes ago that THERE IS a chip capable of playing Original imports (Check out the "NEWBIE ALERT" post I have in this forum). Now I'm trying to find out why noone ever mentioned it and everybody gets only the NEO chip.

yes, you are right !!!!!

i think it is worthy forb oth of them: ffx and mgs2.

i´ve read the post about the origa-chip and i watched the page charlie mentioned.
mmmh... the problem is that the chip should be hard to install.
it took a while until i found some one who installed the neo 2.2 for me.

i am not a technic freak... :-(
and i don`t want to damage my ps2. so i will wait until there is a safe way to boot import games on my ps2.
meanwhile i use the backup technique so far it works.....

are you experienced in patching and dvd-ripping ??

i patched a lot of ps1 games with the ppf and cdrwin. that was easy. i think patching ps2 games ist the same.

but i wonder how the dvd-rips are working. and if it is possible to patch it ntsc-2-pal and rip it also ??

i think i check out the guides at www.megagames.com

i hope that there will be soon a guide for mgs2...... *hope*

I didn't piss around and didn't hesitate in getting Madeira Games to install the Origachip. There will never be a way of booting import originals other than via a complex chip (many wires) that has to read from and write to registers so as to fool the PS2 into thinking that legal things have happened.

But how did you get them to install the chip for you? You actually sent your PS2 and waited for them to return it to you?

It's a service they offer. You can book the PS2 in, take it down there and hang around town for two or three hours and take it back. For some several squids more, they'll arrange collection and re-dispatch.

Do you want to play import originals on your PS2?

Well we do keep our good news to the end, don't we?

Send an email to [email protected] and ask them who is the OrigaChip installer in Israel. As I said before, do you want to play import originals?

Good luck

You won't go wrong with the NEO2.2. You'll just have to make backups of your import originals (with CloneCD) and that's no bad thing. I know the feeling of impatience when you are itching to go. I was like that with the OrigaChip which is why I took the thing along to them. I have had the odd mail correspondence with Hardstore and their reply cycle varies from 1 day to three. Beats playstaionmods.com (makers of NEO) who haven't replied to a single e-mail of mine.

i found some stores in germany which can install the origa. and in some weeks it`ll happen. unfortunately i am short with money in the moment..... :-(

but waiting some weeks is not a big problem.

i have some questions and i hope charlie or anyone else with detailed knowledge can answer me... :-)

1.) my burner isn`t compatible with cdclone :-(
i have nero and cdrwin. i know that cdrwin is needed for games which have to be patched (i think it is the same as
patching ps1 games, isn`t it ?) . but does it also work for 1:1 copies? or does it nero ? or which burner software is
the next best for 1:1 copies ??

2.) copies of ea games, do they really all need a ea-patch ?? or is there another way to boot them ? and is it right that
the origa chip doesn`t need a patch to boot them ?

3.) about the dvd-rip: how does it work ? i think it is like patching a game but what if the game doesn`t fit on a single
cd? i saw a gran turismo 3 dvd rip which was for 2 cds. how do i have to imagine this stuff ? when have the discs to
be changed ??
and then the next question: what`s about an import game on a dvd ? is the dvd-rip an the ntsc-2-pal patch
needed??

so, i hope i haven`t bored anyone and someone can help me.

thanx to everyone who answers and helps me !!!!!

ANSWER: Then you have a potential problem no matter which chip you use. CDRWin will patch any game for which a patch is identoified in one of the databases on the web (e.g. www.sgt-dan.com). But for trouble free copying, CloneCD is the answer. So, save and get a compatible burner if you can, otherwise it's CDRWin and patching.

2.) copies of ea games, do they really all need a ea-patch ?? or is there another way to boot them ? and is it right that the origa chip doesn`t need a patch to boot them ?
ANSWER: EA games play first time if copied with CloneCD. Otherwise they need patching via the method and with the tools to be found on www.eapatcher.com. The OrigaChip is no different from others in this respect.

3.) about the dvd-rip: how does it work ? i think it is like patching a game but what if the game doesn`t fit on a single cd? i saw a gran turismo 3 dvd rip which was for 2 cds. how do i have to imagine this stuff ? when have the discs to be changed ??
ANSWER: We are woking through Paris-Dakar DVD Rip and haven't reached the disk change. Others on the forum have done this and I hope they answer.

4.) what`s about an import game on a dvd ? is the dvd-rip and the ntsc-2-pal patch
needed??
ANSWER: With the Origachip a DVD import original will play (no swap). To get round the NTSC prblem (if it occurs), you'd need a fully loaded PS2-SCART lead (in the UK made by BLAZE). There'll be an equivalent in Germany probably at Makro which is where I bought one recently. So no need to copy the import; no need to rip the import; just play it.
