USB MOD - Games require patching?

I've recently installed a USB MOD (Modchip.com) with the single link wire.

I'm pretty sure I've soldered it correctly but my backed up game won't boot. I've copied R2Rumble2 and Smugglers run using CDRWIN and they appear to copy fine (no patches).

When I try to boot up through the AR2 I got with the Mod following the instructions the disk spins and the light on the MOD flashes in synch (whcih leads me to believe the connection is good) but then the AR2 hangs and I have to reboot.

Any suggestions would be greatly received!
