zenner diode

maybe this isn't the right board to post this on but I hope there may be a few techs out there who could help me.
I have a psx with a faulty power supply. I know the fault lies with a s/c zenner diode (D103), but I do not know what type this is, i.e what is the voltage & power rating of this diode.
Can u help please

What are the markings on the diode?

Is it an SMD device or normal barrel shapped?

If its not an SMD then what it its approximate size?

Why have you decided its a zener and not a normal diode?

Any further information you could give would also help to identify it.

The diode is on the psu not the main board and is through board mounted not a smd. It is a glass barrel shaped diode about 2mm long (excluding legs), it's orange at one end and black at the other, but with no id to what type it is, i.e bzy/bzx...
It's position on the board is D103 and I am sure it's a zenner as the symbol on the board shows it as one i.e normal diode symbol but with a tail off the line. Hope this helps spooky.....

Hi Rabbit,

Well yes D103 is indeed a zenner diode and i have managed to identify it. The markings on the device itself are misleading and are probably a house number for Sony, i.e. only Sony and Authorised dealer/Repair centers know its true value but persistance pays off.

The device number that you need to track down is RD10ES produced by NEC Electron Devices.

Check this page for its characteristics,

http://www.ic.nec.co.jp/discrete/eng.../rd/rd_es.html

The positioning of the diode in the circuit would suggest that its value is critical to the units correct operation and safety.

Also check here for a schematic.

http://psxhelp.users4.50megs.com/9002afullsd.htm

Now you know what it is, its up to you to find it.

Try Farnell (Mail order from Leeds), or RS Components.

Have fun.

Thanks spooky

Your info and links are of great help. Although I have not been able to find the RD10SE at farnells or RS, from the info given at nec the diode is a 10 volt / 400mw zener, and a bzy c10 would seem to fit the bill. Anyway for 5p it is worth a try before I dish out £15 for a new psu.
