segagen

I found some files for the segagen...It is the obsidian version...In one of the text files it says Hacked for ease of use by TreyJazz. This should clear up problems you have had with the self booting release. It also says:

It is recommended to burn the image with Nero.
Settings:
Iso Level 2
Mode 1
Iso 9660
Joliet on
More than 255 characters for names

So I made an iso with Nero and put it on a cdr...Then I extracted the image with cdrwin, which created a bin and a cue file...I started bin2boot exe and I dragged the bin file to the bin2boot...this created an image cdi file I then burned it with discjuggler.

Results: I got it to self boot and the Obsidian title came up and then the screen went black... Did I do something wrong? Is using the self boot kit the only way to make it work? Do I need some type of audio track?...can that be the problem?...how do i create that?

I’ve never used ECHELON's self boot toolkit...is it easy to use...is it the only way to make self bootable segagen with roms?

to selfboot the ECHELON's SegaGen
bin2boot will work

to selfboot the OBSIDIAN's SegaGen
you should use Echelon's Selfboot Toolkit
bin hack *.bin to 11700

Thanks for your responses jeffman....

I would like to have a self bootable SegaGen with roms using the obsidian version, however trying to create one seems to be a difficult task for me...I have never used the Echelon's Selfboot Toolkit before. And the directions to create one seem very tough to follow....

Did you ever create a self bootable SegaGen obsidians version cd jeffman? Is there an easier way to do it other than using Echelon's Selfboot Toolkit? Also what do you mean by bin hack *.bin to 11700.

It seems that I might have to use ECHELON's SegaGen and use the bin2boot exe....however I can not find one, all I find are obsidian versions....can someone tell me where I can find the original one?

Can anyone help me?

I tried to make a self boot SegaGen obsidian version with ROMs on one cd but I failed miserably...first of all cdrwin does not pick up my recorder and I had to do everything using cdrecord... I got the plain files for SegaGen and the self bootable version of lemecs loader that came in obs-lmsb.zip. I replaced all the necessary files.

I added audio.raw using these settings
cdrecord -dev=0,1,0 -multi -audio audio.raw speed=4

I found this thread here

http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=39045

in this website and used it as a guide as well as the echelon tutorial.

I binhacked the following bin files using 11702 because that’s the number msinfo gave me (cdrecord) after I burned the audio.raw

Ginreset.bin
Manifest.bin
Mde_us.bin
1st_read.bin

binhacked with ip.bin as read only for the first 3 and binhacked with ip.bin not read only for the 1st_read.bin...

I used mkisofs to make the iso (an iso called data.iso was created and was about 40mbs)

I ran ipn.exe and used the ip.bin that was created from 1st_read.bin after it was binhacked and used this ip.bin as the bootsector to the iso.

I burned it with these setting in cdrecord:
-dev=0,1,0 -xa1 -speed=1 data.iso

I put it in my dc...it boots up then I get a black screen.....
these are the contents in the SegaGen cd folder I created

E:
-0GDTEX.PVR
-1ST_READ.BIN
-GINRESET.BIN
-GINSU.INI
-GINXFER.BIN
-MAIN.DAT
-MANIFEST.BIN
-MDE_US.BIN
-ROMS (folder)
-TITLE.DAT

E:\ROMS
-HAIKEI.PVR
-MANATEE.DRV
-MOJI01.PVR
-OPTION.PVR
-STREAM.MLT
along with 20 games all bin.

please tell me if I’m missing something?....is there anyone out there that got this thing to work on there dreamcast? Do I need to create a dummy file...cause the tutorial never said I had to? Can anyone help me?

Your bad move. You don't know how to selfboot and you start with one of the most difficult tasks. I suggest that you first learn how to selfboot something easy, THEN try segagen.
BTW, install WinASPI. Probably this will let you use CDRWin.
AFAIK, and as jeffman said, SegaGen MUST be at 11700, NOT 11702. I get 11702 when I use cdrecord, but I get 11700 when I use CDRWin. Also *NOTHING* must be read-only! Remove EVERY read-only attribute from EVERY file you're going to use.
Last, binhack ip.bin and 1st_read.bin ONLY, nothing else.
ip.bin is not "created" from 1st_read.bin: it should be in the obsidian zip, or anyway you can use any other ip.bin from any other emulator/game. Then insert ip.bin in data.iso with ipins.

Thanks for your reply weezee...

Yes your right I’m no self boot expert....I followed the directions to self boot very carefully....Maybe my problem was the binhacking all those bin files to 11702.

So you suggest I not bin hack the following bin files?
Ginreset.bin
Manifest.bin
Mde_us.bin

Also when I binhack 1st_read.bin...it does create a new ip.bin...
So you mean to tell me I should never use this new modified version of the ip.bin...I should simply use the one that came with the self bootable version of lemecs loader that came in obs-lmsb.zip?

You also say I should binhack the ip.bin as well? Why would I want to do that? Also is it necessary to create a dummy file...cause I did not do that? Can I still binhack 11700 even though it says 11702 when i use cdrecord? I wish i could use cdrwin but im stuck with using cdrecord...

Is there a utility out there to make cdrwin recognize my drive...ive used ForceASPI but that did not work....i use windows 98 se...

I really want to get this segagen thing to work...

Do not binhack anything except 1st_read and ip.bin.

Binhack must be in the same place were the 2 files are. It will
ask you 3 things: binary name, bootsector and LBA.
They are 1st_read.bin, ip.bin and 11700.
It will tell you "ip.bin created": that's a stupid confusing message.
Ignore it.

Move 1st_read.bin inside your data folder.

Create data.iso.

Ipins ip.bin in data.iso.

Burn.

BTW, until you find a way to have 11700 on your audio track, there is no point in doing this. As I remember, Obsidian Lemec loader WANTS to be at 11700.

Try Adaptec webpage for ASPI layer and try more that 1 version of CDRWin. I use v3.9be.
CDRWin v4a-e doesn't work for me, for example.

Thanks for the replies...

I just cannot get cdrwin to recognize my burner...So it seems that I will not be able to make the self bootable version of lemecs loader that came in obs-lmsb.zip work for SegaGen.

Are you guys sure that cdrwin is the ONLY way to get this thing done...?

Does anyone know of another way to create this thing maybe using nero?

I would just hate to give up now!

Use any burning software that supports Multisession to burn the audio.raw . Make sure it burns at 1x, this will give you the 11700 offset.

If it doesn't burn the raw file convert it to wave and try that.

Thanks for replying.

What other burning software do you suggest I use?

Can I burn the audio raw with Nero? If so what settings must I use? What about the created data.iso, what settings should I use to burn that iso with nero?

Has anyone ever used nero or any other burning software to create a self bootable SegaGen with roms on one CD? Because cdrwin does not WORK for me.

Has anyone ever successfully created one using cdrecord? I tried but failed.

I've tried everything to make cdrwin recognize my drive but nothing has worked. I’ve used ForceASPI 1.7, the new aspi from adaptec, and aspi fixer...none of them worked to make cdrwin recognize my driver.

I Really want to get SegaGen to work for me.

Can anyone help me out?

I guess I’m out of luck... It seems that no one knows how to create a self bootable SegaGen cd without cdrwin.

It seems that I am going to have to make one that in non self bootable....

I'll check from time to time to see if anyone else reponds to this thread...

Thanks to everyone that replied and tried to help me out...
