I've done more than one search through more than one forum, and I've not found any answer or discussion specific to what I want to ask.
Some time ago, I discovered that by using a slimline PS2 and rigging the sensors, you can make the disc spin even while the lid is open. As a result, one can swap out a game for a backup copy, allowing the backup copy to be played. However, this will only work for PS1 games. The reason why this is successful is because the security checking component of the PS2 console is being tricked into thinking you have a legitimate, factory made disc. What I want to know is why nobody has, or ever will discover a way to trick a PS2 into doing the same with PS2 games? Of course, I can buy a modchip or swap magic, but that's not good enough for me. My personal goal is to find a way to play a PS2 backup on a PS2 that is un-modded (save for the sensors, mind you). During a security check, a PS1 disc speeds up and slows down, prompting a switch. Although it is quite different on a thick, original model PS2, it can still be done if you remove the top shell of both the PS2 and the disc drive. The pattern for this model is as follows : Security check -> reads data -> security check. Now that I've mentioned two examples of security check patterns, does anyone know of such a pattern when booting up PS2 games? I've chosen this forum because I'm sure many of you are walking encyclopedias on the subject. I know I'm new, but please don't flame me. I'd really appreciate some info so that I can accomplish my goal. Thanks guys. |

Errr.... SwapMagic?
Its basically the same thing, cover the 3 sensors, use the SwapMagic disc, take it out insert your backup (not warez copy) and play. Swap Magic is NOT a mod chip in any way , and does not modify the hardware only covers the sensors (for some mad reason you said it is). Has been out for years. There is also the Memor32, which is a Memory Card with a modchip on it. Hard to get now I believe. |

I understand that swap magic is in no way a modchip. It's only a method of bypassing security. For using the PS1 swap trick, any ol' PS1 game will do as a boot disc, but ONLY if it was factory made. I use Medal of Honor (not that it has anything to do with anything).
however, I don't wish to use swap magic when trying a similar method with a PS2 game. I want to use a factory made PS2 game...say Devil May Cry, and use it as a boot disc. For the sake of this post, pretend that swap magic and mod chips don't exist. Now we're left with emulating the PS1 swap trick method with PS2 games. but as it stands now, this simply won't work. Then, I ask why. It has to do with the order and number of security checks a PS2 does on a PS2 disc. but what is happening for a PS2 game that is different than with a PS1 game? Anyone who knows the answer, here's the place to put it. |

It wont work.. Different games have different access times for protection reading for this very reason to prevent people trying to swap discs.

@baconbeacon: swapping has now become a pre-historic thing of the past. also, pulling recklessly a ps2 game from the spinning spindle causes damage to the motor that rotates the disc for the laser to read and you'll end up having to spend $15 for a replacement. not only is it harmful to the hardware but is noobishly silly in thought.
what you need to look for is for a "softmod" which is a sole software hack that is stored within the memory card (as in memento and it sure is hard to find in america). you can exclude the most basic and old-school softmod methods because they targeted in hacking the fat ps2 and you have a slim. the slim has been revised and this means that sony has implemented an anti-mod design rendering the exploits useless. but there are newer ways for softmodding your slim console. though, there are other methods for installing fmcb on your mc to run with a slim. fmcb or memento will not run a slim console. google keyword "turn 007: nightfire into a bootdisk." 1. the latest softmod exploits is free memory card boot aka "FMCB 1.8b" which is a homebrew software that enables the use of other multiple apps. reason being is that the older softmods required that a ps1 trigger disc be inserted for the trigger of another homebrew app called uLaunchELF aka "uLE " (stored in the mc). uLE is a powerful filebrowser and also allowed the booting of homebrew apps via the mc or a USB stick. fmcb (once installed) does away with the trigger disc method. though, there are other methods for installing fmcb on your mc to run with a slim. fmcb or memento will not run a slim console in the SCPH-9xxxxx series with a date code higher than 8B. slim consoles with a 8C, 8D, and ect. will have the newer bios 2.30 and this bios is unhakable for fmcb or memento. you'll need a modchip (matrix infinity, DMS4, or Modbo) or swap magic 3.6 or 3.8 for back ups. 2. ESR is a homebrew program that allows you to insert a back up without the need for swapping! no more cogswap, swap magic, or ripping your disc off the dvd drive spindle. you are required to patch the disc image with ESR disc patcher and that's it. 3. uLE is just an awesome and the foremost filebrowser for the ps2 for a tons of different uses. today, we have some very nice apps can be used without the aid of a modchip or of a modchip based disc such as "swap magic." the current softmods have slight advantages over a modchip. nevertheless does a modchip run a back up/ISO without shrinking it, rebuilding it, or patching it for ESR. 4. yet, HDLoader aka "HDL" (current version 0.8c) is the ps2 modding scene's trump card. HDLoader has such a high rate of compatibility for games than what toxicOS, HDAdvance, or USBextreme has. USBadvance is the only method for playing games directly from a usb-hdd since the slim consoles no longer have the expansion bay as the fat consoles do. loading times and performance is better than running a disc. plus, you can also preserve your laser by playing games directly from the hdd. anyways, this is too long.....
