Going through with modding

I think Ive waited a bit to long but im finally going through with getting my Vers1-3? PS2 modded I have a SCPH-30001 10 screw PS2 so i guess its between versions 1-3 now can someone just verify what I have to be careful of now with that Version?

I was searching the forums and came up with info about DVD-R, DVD+R compatability so now I have to rethink my idea of getting the $200 Sony DRU5001 multi platform burner (+/-) can someone maybe help me out/should I be getting a different one?

Also the chip I want in my PS2 is the following- http://www.modchip.ca/products/ps2/magic3.php

its the MAgic 3.1 (Is that the best choice for my setup?)
And I will be sending my system away to freedomlives.com 's Bill to mod my system for the $60 unless there's anyone in the NY area that installs mods?

Thank you all very much

Your choice of Bill at Freedomlives is correct.

Your choice of Magic 3.1 is questionable - the device doesn't play everything, especially DVD rips on CD-R.

I personally won't advise you which chip to buy as I am deeply associated with the Messiah 2 team. others will provide advice I'm sure.

The DRU 500A isn't as well regarded as the Pioneer A05 or A06. I've not heard anything bad about the DRU500A, but more people have the Pioneer and can supprot you better through the forums.

regarding DVD rips on CD-r...where can i get some more info on that (ill search the forums i guess) but one question maybe you can answer about that--If you can rip DVDs onto CD-r does that even require a DVD burner?

If I was to buy a Messiah 2 would that mean I dont need a DVD burner and could just rip them to CD-r or does that just apply for certain games?

Also what other pluses/minuses can you tell me about the Magic 3.1, Right now I will search prices for the Messiah 2 though

Also is that Pioneer A04-5 about the same price range as the Sony..Im not brand happy just looking for something to get the job done

Ripping a DVD to CD-R is the way of the past. Its better to back up your games to DVD if they are DVD bases of course. The reason for this is that with a DVD rip you loose allot of the game like movies music and even parts of the game. I myself have a Sony DRU-500 and love it because I don't just use it for PS2 back-ups. However if this is your main reason for buying a DVD burner I would suggest the pioneer A05 or A06. I just put an A06 in a customers PC on Friday and he loves it. As for the chip if you like the magic line I would go with the new magic-V5 the 3.1 has a few bugs. The messiah team has been on top for a long time and reasonably so they have a very good product. However there are chips out there days that are just as good and less expensive. Even though I still have a Messiah 1.3 in my personal console. This is because at the time there wasn't anything as good but now there is so look around. Let us know how it goes.

Quite simply squeezing 4.7GB onto 700MB is a bad choice. You lose so much. SO don't bother. A Pioneer DVD burner costs around £100/$150. The Pioneer ALWAYS gets the job done. Personal experience and of most of the "majors" on this forum (I think).

agic 3.1 is way cheaper than Messiah2 and if you stay clear of rips, it'll do for you in my opinion. It'll not be perfect booting everything first time, but that won't be too much of a worry. There are better chips and Messiah2 is one of them.

Thanks again im learning a lot today...i now believe Im going to buy the Sony burner as I would like to have the option to make movies and use it for other purposes as well even for the fact that my regualer CD-RW max writing speed is only 4X stinking HPs..I really could use a whole comp upgrade but whatever thats a whole nother forum

As for my mod chip Ive changed my mind again..I read about this Smart Chip and how it wipes the floor with Magic..and
Americanmodz.com has an installation service to put that chip in altogether for $75 so ill be saving money, losing a step in the process to modding, and getting a better chip.

Thanks for your replies guys
