I'm no expert on this, but I have read that this can happen because of the laser. Please correct if I'm wrong, but to test if it is the laser you can play the game with your playstation upside down, that is sitting on its lid, and see if the fmv sequences run any better. If they do then write back and someone on the forum will be able to give you some further advice i'm sure.

no no, your wrong. all of my games skip a bit, but that is because of the program i use(cdrwin). i burnt ff8 and it completely froze on the fmvs. i then used blind write which amazingly copied the game so perfectly, that there wasnt even a tiny bit of skipping!! dont go thinking that your burner is stuffed, just try with other programs.

I presume that you are burning the backups that skip on your 700x but play fine on your friends 900x, if so then its not your burning software.
But regardles of whos burning the games if the work fine in a newer machine(900x), but skip in an older machine (700x) then it does indeed point to the laser of your PSX and NOT the burning software. As skewesy mentioned you may be able to prove this by turning your PSX onto its side and in most cases you should see a visible improvement in the FMV sequences, but if there is no change then dont worry as this trick does'nt always work. Just because you laser needs a smalll adjustment does'nt mean that its on its way out, infact anything that has moving parts takes time to bed in so some adjustment is always needed at some stage to keep the performance. If you feel adventurous then you can adjust the laser fairly easily. All the playstations have at least one adjustment that you can make to resolve this. With the model you have you need to remove the lid where you will see the laser assembly, look for the copper coloured ribbon cable that connects the laser to the main board and at the top of this robbon you will see a small pot (potentiometer) which needs to be turned only a fraction, make a mental note of its original position, and then with your finger (NOT a screwdriver) twist the pot either clock wise or anti clockwise. Test the PSX by holding down the micro switch and boot with a game. If need be repeat these steps and re test and if at any time you hear a constant clicking then you know that you have twisted the pot too far and need to rotate it in the other direction. This may take a little time to setup correctly but it will be worth it in the end. mortice, your not wrong in what you have said, CDRWin can be fussy with the condition of the original disc which can have an adverse effect with the quality of the backups, CDRWin is far happier with clean/new discs. Blind read is able to read to read discs that would normaly be thrown out by another program including CDRWin. There are lots of reasons that could cause FMV skipping but blaming the burning software when DarKnight mentioned that the backups and FMV's run fine on his friends PSX would automatically rule this out!
