PS2 Vertical or Horizontal
Hi guys, I have a quick question.
I always had my PS2 in the Vertical position, but a couple of days ago, I was in my local video rental shop, and they had a little book on how to take care of your DVDs. It was for free, so I took it. Reading it, I came to a page that said "If you have a playstation 2 it is recommended to have it on the horizontal position, because the vertical position can scratch the DVDs." Is that true? What is better for the PS2 and for my backup games?? Thanx

Kinda sorta true. The laser gets closer to your disc in the vertical position because you have a freefloating laser.
If you have it horizontal then the laser has gravity pulling it away from the disc leaving less scratches. Just wanted to mention that when your ps2 is vertical your laser does read it a tad better. Tyler!

I have had it positioned both ways. The veritical will sometimes skip on me when playing movies, but never with games. Since I do occasionally use it for movies, I keep it horizontal.

Both my PS2's have never touched a disc in the Vertical position since I have had one. I prefer vertical. Looks better and takes up far less space.

Dust We have found the biggest killer of PS2's to be dust. At the rear of your console is a fan. This draws cooling air through the grill on the front, over the delicate circuits and your laser. Unfortunately, a side effect of this cooling action is that the fan draws in all your household dust including pet hairs! If your motherboard clogs up with dust it will short circuit! If your laser gets clogged up with dust, it will work harder to read your discs and wear out VERY quickly. You should lightly hoover the front grill on your PS2 weekly with whatever attachments you possess. This simple action will substantially increase the life of your machine. It has been known for a PS2 to be ruined within 3 months due to dust! You should also use a vertical stand for your console. This reduces the amount of dust that can settle on the laser.

I wonder if changing the wiring on the fan so it blows out would be any better? Or if that would work at all?

you could always add another fan as a push pull system - one blows one sucks...
that is how my graphics card works... but unfortunately not my wife...  sorry the child in me couldn't resist. Problem with any ventilated system is that no matter which way the fan works - air has to enter some how to enable it to be blown out again or in... In the case of PS2's it means that the front grill gets filled with dust - the mess on the carpet I have made in one day by cleaning just three stations I was working on was amazing - note - white carpet is not a good thing to have on the floor in your work area.... If you can get a better filter element at the front like in some airconditioners that blocks more dust particales but still does not restrict air flow then that would be the best option - although cleaning would be needed all the time... add to it that electronics statically attracts dust anyway... Personally back to the Vertical horizontal thing - Vertical is better to prevent scratches from larger dust particles sitting in the tray - but I would say worse for cheap disks that are not balanced well... My main arguement against placing vertical is that the laser lens assembly is designed for horizontal use... so it has to be better... doesn't it...?
