I have an idea....
Okay - we all know the DC has a modem right. And most of us here have a PC modem right. Now, what if one were to connect the PC and DC together via the modems (using an ordinary phone jack - one with the smaller plugs on either ends), then using any old data transfer software (say, Hyper Terminal). Of course, one would need to be made for the DC, but no biggy for someone in the know with the DC and WinCE. Then - exchanging the data (of the GD-ROM) from the DC to the PC.
Altho this makes perfect sense in my head...I guess there might be other issues at stake here, but any comments? |

In theory this might work. But, data transfer would "might" be rather slow depending on the
speed of the modem. As for example a 56k modem is limited in transfer speeds to 56k. That being 56 K-Bits p/s. 8 Bits being 1 Byte. So to rip lets say Sonic Adventure (1.2 gig or so I hear) at a rate of 56k would take days. Ripping our own games is an interesting idea however it leaves issues such as size. Where as most iso's we aquire have (some) audio ripped or converted to mono. And in some cases FMV ripped out in order for it to fit on a standard 74min or 80min cd. I myself would be able to convert audio but as for ripping movies from a game is another issue. All in all I like your idea. But I would rather use a NIC card. Atleast then I could get 10 Mega bit transfer rates.

Wait a second - how can sonic be 1.2 gig when the format is on can only handle 1 gig? (GD-ROM)

I know that the format can only handle 1gig. But in the nfo it says 1.2gigs. I will post it here if I still have it unless someone esle can. From what I know you
can over burn even a GD-ROM. But to over burn it 200megs is another story. It is also possible that the GD-ROM format stores the data diffrently.

Quote from the nfo:
Please note that this CD is PACKED. It had 1.2gb of data which has been reduced to 732. This game REQUIRES an 80 Minute CD. Do not try to overburn this one, It's 79:56. Here a link to the NFO: http://205.134.182.35/release.php3?releaseid=8529

It would take a while, but I think it would be worth it, since I cant use the other ways of doing it, this would be my only way, so if any programmers wanna try to make it work, it would be cool.

Would it be possible to make this software for the DC so that the two could communicate?? Also has neone used a data cable to read the games and does it work well?? What speed does it work at?? And sorry for my ignorance but what is a NIC card and how could it be used to read the GD ROM contents. Please reply!

An NIC card is used for a LAN (Local Area Network). Speeds are like 10 Mega Bits/ps
to 100 Mega bits/ps. I can get upto 1.4 megs/ps on tranfers between to pcs. So Speed would be fairly fast.

This will be sweet if you could use the broadband adapter. Seeing that the Dreamcast has a browser, you could run an applet on an HTML page that could initiate a data pull (rip) from the web server side. You would be able to back-up a GDROM in minutes. Maybe software is not the complete answer here maybe a good web hack is. We know a lot more about HTML than we do about the Dreamcast code (or even WinCE). Just dreaming out-loud
