1. Where does the file come from? 2. Can you quote us its first few bytes in hexadecimal? (If you don't know how to do that, run od -N 32 -x FILENAME, using the GNU "od" utility: http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/coreutils.htm.) 3. Try to identify it with the GNU "file" utility: http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/file.htm. 4. Also search for "file type identifier" on Google and try some of the hits.
