Magic 3.6

Was curious if anyone has this modchip and has installed it. 1. Does it require any soldering? 2. Does this version work well with all the various media types?

Thanks, B

Is this even a real chip? I had always kinda assumed that the "Magic 3.6" was just a Magic 3.1 clone.

A 3.6 is a 3.1 with a clip. This just reduces the number of wires to be soldered. These are very chincy and can come loose pretty easily.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm really out of the loop with the mod chips and recently bought a ps2 for my son. If you could recommend a mod chip from the various models out there that I might have the best success with it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

I bought the 3.1 and had a horrible time installing and soldering it in. You almost need a microscope and a hot needle. It does work good for games but i've lost the ability to play dvds on my V7 PS2. Because it was such a pain in the ass to install, i'd rather do without the ability to watch a movie than pull the bloody thing apart and resolder the joints. Overall, I don't recommend the chip.

Messiah 2 is probably the best and most reliable. Apple chips are not far behind and a good deal cheaper.

One thing i forgot to add, i have the clip on mine too (but still a 3.1) but it is some L shaped board that was the worst. Even taking the V7 apart is a pain in the ass. To install the chip they send you, you must totally disassemble your PS2. And i don't just mean the cover, i mean the removal of the mother board in the ps2. I had to solder some the L shaped bracket on one side and the chip on the other, also the disassemble directions modchip sends suck. This L shaped bracket i've mentioned is not shown in the initial pics but if you go to: http://www.modchip.com/images/diam35v7final.jpg
you'll see it in the bottom left hand pic, it's a pain to oh my god porportions and the reason you must totally remove the mother board from the ps2.

Have been looking at a few sites for the puchasing of Messiah 2. Is there a reason some are sold for 29.00 and other sites selling for 69.00? Seems like a large price difference for the same item.

Any particular sites you guys could recommend to purchase the mod chip?

even without this L clip you must disassamble the board completely to solder wires to these points. The L clip is a completely useless peice though because it makes the points harder to solder than it is to solder the wires to directly to it.

bullitt411: If you are seeing a messiah 2 for $30 then it is likely a fake. It should be priced in the $50 to $60 range. You have a pm bullitt.

i just recieved the 3.6 a few days ago. It has clips, and there isn't much to solder compared to my friends chip (23 wires). Anyways, I've seen 2 different v7 ps2 install diagrams (only for 1 solder point though). One picture said "solder these points together" along with a wire from the chip. The other just said solder the wire, nothing about soldering both points.

Anyways, did anyone notice that the zoomed in picture that shows the ground point is different than the finished installed picture?

As far as the ground goes I am not sure what picture you are looking at, but doesn't really matter. There are several ground points along the board all of which work equally well. As far as the diagram that shows to sloder two points together I wouldn't go with it. Rarely will you ever solder two points together on a board. The only time this has to be done for a modchip is the PAL to NTSC patch on a messiah. It is possible that magic 3.6 requires something similar but I doubt it because 3.0 does not require it.

as of now, the playstation 2 just sits when I try to turn it on. No display and the eject button doesn't do anything. I'm pretty sure the points are right, but as I mentioned before I've seen different guides for the same chip and version of PS2, so I'm not too sure.

I haven't really looked into the PS2 modding, but I haven't found much help with this chip searching google. It seems as though everybody copied the same installation instructions and slapped their site logo on it, which is pretty dumb if you ask me.

Can anyone possible flash me a couple if pictures of the finished install? I want to compare a bit.
