Question about decoding GOP structure & a custom MPEG quantization matrix

Hi all,

This topic is very loosely related to games, even looser still in relation to PC games, but I'm trying to encode the pre-rendered cutscenes of a couple of "PS3" titles, to be used in a PC emulated repack.

The titles in question currently are "God of War III (3)" & the "PS3" exclusive, "Folklore". Both titles use MPEG videos with the file signature "00 00 01 B3", with the former having had its videos encoded using the now legacy software, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress and I'm assuming a similar software if not the same was used for "Folklore", as the structure of videos, as seen in a hex editor is very similar.

A sample of "Folklore" can be found here, with an additional extract from said sample listing the details can be found here.

A sample of "God of War 3" can be found here, with an additional extract from said sample listing the details can be found here.

My current attempts are exclusive to Folklore (I will attempt to see if I can encode "God of War III"s videos using some basic methods), and have all resulted in failure to properly render, with a few pixels being rendered at the top, with this being stretched down to the bottom of the screen, as seen here. It is interesting though that both audio and subtitle data is properly rendered, despite the video file being buggered.

My question is has anyone successfully attempted to encode these types of videos, and if so could anyone shed some light on the process? I'm not too experienced with encoding, my knowledge is limited to a basic understanding of what bitrates are appropriate for which type of video. I have a basic understanding of the function of a quantization matrix & GOP structure, but I'm honestly clueless as to how to (if it's even possible) decode a custom matrix, and modify the GOP structure, as seen in the 2 samples above.

My apologies if this post seems a bit unorganised, I've written this spontaneously, and haven't really organised it appropriately. I just wanted to get this out there in case someone here has had experience with this process, since I can find murmurings around the internet, but nothing substantial.
