Smile Saturn Questions

Hi, i hope its ok to post this here as the Dreamcast is its big brother

Could some peoplw who play backups on there saturn without a mod clear a few things up for me and answer a few questions

So far ive found out by google and talking to some people that i can do a swaptrick to boot backups with the saturn that has a round power button and open button.

Ive heard people say the swap is very hard to perform and boots 1/100 trys and ive also heard its very easy for some people too

Also would i be able to boot backups that are from USA/Japan region on a UK PAL Saturn using the swap or just PAL backups?

And if anyone has a step by step guide for doing the swap that would be very nice

Thank you

As i'm a saturn lover I can probably answer.

The swap is very easy... AND very hard!

It all depends on your type of saturn. You have an old saturn model 1 with small oval buttons and a 2 flashlights on the left and right? then its Easy. I have this one so trust me. Downside here is that a modchip is virtually impossible to find. Model 1 uses 20 pin mod chip, model 2 21 pin. The latter is still available.

If you have a later one with only 1 light and big round DC ish reset and power buttons, its VERY hard. Good thing is, an 21 pin mod chip (made for model 2) for this is quite easy to buy on quite some sites....

If u have a PAL saturn u need a PAL backup AND a PAL original to swap with. Use ssatconv to convert all iso's to PAL. OTHERWISE IT WONT BOOT W/O COUNTRY SWITCH THAT IS, which I assume u dont have. So if u downloaded a jp game like Radiant, make it PAL with this easy prog. This is what tricked me the first times; i knew i did the swap proper but it wouldn't work :P

FOR MODEL 1 SATURN ONLY:

Good What i did with my model 1 saturn:

- I screwed it open, 5 screws on the bottom.
- i turned it up again, took the batteryled off.
- I removed the upper shell by lifting it up.

Then to the upper left of the CD laser (10 o clock) you see a little tower, that thing clicks in whenever the CD led closes, so what u do is get some tape and tape it around the tower (so that u can remove it when u want, if u ever want it back to normal). Now it stays pressed and the saturn thinks the led is closed when powered on.

Put the thing (sry for being so respectless, i love the machine ) together again and take ur backup CD. Put it in and power it on, with ofcourse the led open, now it flashes a few times (for 3 secs or so) while the big grey saturn screen pops up. When it stops flashing take the CDR out and put an original in (u can do this still quite relaxed, just not let it take TOO long). Now is the somewhat harder part: when the original CD loads after having it brought in watch it flashing 1 TIME, and then Quickly 3 TIMES IN A ROW now QUICKLY take the original out and put the backup in... if the black sega logo pops up your ready to play. Feel free to close the led during play; it doesnt have influence. Its good for dust protection.

After 2 or 3 try's it became 2nd nature with me, only I don't use it anymore cuz I realized i don't want to screw around with my saturn anymore... Besides i completed Dracula X Also FinalBurnX made the saturn quite obsolete (xmen vs sf or vampire savior anyone?). Do it at ur own risk Its not healthy for ur laser but I did it for quite some time and my saturn is still alive and well.

If u got model 2 saturn.. then its badder for ur laser for the more strict timing and no flashing light to help you... get a modchip.
