newbie with a CDR!!!! and DVD!!!!

ok hello all i am new to all this burning and ripping and all that lol. but i hear rummors that i can copy dc games for a backup purpose on my computer and then if need be i can use them for play on my dc if the?
i have a samsung DVD 12 x and a sony cdr at 8x4x32. pentium 3 933mhz can it be done??
