v7 laser help..

Hey guys.. i installed a chip into this machine and it wud read cd-r backups and cd-r originals but no dvd games at all.. i remove the chip and it reads everything.. reinstall the chip and the same thing.. remove the chip and now it dont read anything!! i checked the laser readings and on the left side it was around 1000 and the right was about 1343 or sumthing!!
i was gonna adjust the right (DVD? )pot down until i got it to work but im woundering how it cud be so messed..
ALSO i noticed b4 i installed the chip that oringals wud go into the browser b4 booting.. just for a second or so but it wud never boot until it came to the browser..
I cant really afford a new laser rite now and i was doing this as a favor for a freind.. and now im worried im gonna have to fork out $60-80 for a new laser!
