Viewing a recorded DVD TV prog on the PC?

I hope this is the right place to post.
I recorded a TV programme last night on my Philips DVDR70, and it plays back perfectly fine on the DVD recorder and on another Panasonic DVD player I have.
However when I took it to my PC and tried using the DVD-ROM I have on that, it wouldn't even recognise that a disc was in the disk drive.
I was hoping I would be able to view it and possibly copy it for others to view.
It's not copyright material, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't read the disk.

Anyone have any thoughts?
