Angry Connecting to Xbox live is pi**ing me off

I just bought a brand new machine un-modded for use with live. Can anyone give info on how to connect using just a crossover cable. I dont have a router, etc, as i connect to the net with a USB modem. I have a NIC, which is not used. My IP address is static given by my ISP and i dont have to enter any DNS settings for my connection either, yet the xbox wants DNS settings, which i dont have. I know of the ICS that you have to do, yet i enabled that.

Do you have to enter any IP settings for the NIC like you would do to FTP to the xbox, as when i enter a given one, the xbox reconises it, yet displays DNS error. However, if i assign IP auto from the PC in the TCP/IP setting, the xbox cannot obtain an IP at all.

Does this make any sense? The web site is crap and doesn't explain enough for the error messages you recieve.

Thanks!!!!!
