newbie in trouble

I have the latest PS2 & an action replay max.. I load the action replay disk in, open the draw (without using the eject button) I put in my back up & nothing happens.......

Is there a guide how to run backups or do I need a mod chip or am I just stupid.....????

Please help a newbie ...
