I have the same drive and self booters work fine for me. the only game that give me a hard time is samba de amigo usa self boot.

on some self booters, the cd player in the pc detects a 3 second track and plays it and you will notice in your dj screen, the reader will only say 1 track 6:00. i eject the cd and close it back up and then it reads the 2 sessions.

also make sure you are saving to a temp image before burning for IDE drives.

Sounds like you're just not being patient enough. Sometimes DJ doesn't take a very long time to get past the 2% or 7% mark. After that the buffer should fill up fine. What error does it give you when you just sit and wait a long time? Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space and that you are using the latest ASPI drivers. Are you trying to make copies of backups or are you burning from a CDI?

I had many of the same probs.
UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE on the CD-RW
go to padus.com they have links in the support section to all the cdrw makers and where to get the firmware upgrade(free)

Also make shure you turn off

control panle --- device manager---- then go to your cdroms and turn off self boot(or whatever its called)
