audio cdr vs. data cdr

I have an older stand alone audio cd recorder which only accepts blank 'audio' cdr media. How does the audio cd media differ from regular old data cd media? One can luse the latter in a pc to create audio disks so the distinction seems strange. Can a plain data cdrom be converted to an 'audio' cdrom using a pc?

Any info would be helpful.
