Firmware is like driver to your video devices but with the exception that it is located in a memory inside your cd-r. This "drivers" tells your cd-recorder how to read and how to write cds.Because this, a cd-r could write succesfully a copy-protection or not and every company(plextor,traxdata,kodak....) has its own firmware for each cd-r.You can upgrade your firmware from your cd-r home page.
At www.ahead.de (nero home page) there is a list of cd-r with links to their firmware.

Good luck!
