Angry unexplained coastery

i'm having problems copying vagrant story (PAL). cdrwin is turning out coasters.

i'm not actually working from the original (it's back home - i'm on holiday and didn't want to risk losing original cds), but from a 1-to-1 copy i made with clonecd. but i don't think this is the problem; if i use ePSXe to play straight from the .bin file, it works fine.

i've used CDRWIN to extract the disc image, and PPF-O-MATIC to apply the protection & pal/ntsc selector patch. it says that it's worked.

but when i use CDRWIN to burn the image, after it says 'burning successful' i am left with a CD that not only doesnt work in the PSX, but ePSXe wont load it, nor will even windows explorer. something's wrong. at first i thought perhaps the CDs* didn't like being burned at 2x (or 4x; i dont remember), but i also tried burning with it set to MAX, and i had the same result.

any ideas?

also, i had the same result last week when i tried to copy tomb raider 4, but i assumed that was because the game was pretty scratched-up. cdrwin (or was it nero? ...i dont remember) managed to read an image from the cd, but it took a long time.

help would be greatly appreciated

p.s. my writer here is a CyberDrive CW038D. i've successfully copied psx games with it in the past (just not with CDRWIN - but i needed to use it this time cuz the game needed patching). i'm running windows xp.
