Do you mean the newest version of sony's burner or replacement...if replacement whats wrong with the DRU-500A?

Yes it's the newest version.

Writes at 4x on both DVD-R & DVD+R, 2.4x DVD-R(W) & DVD+R(W), 24x CD-R.

Apparently Sony have released this new drive rather than keep updating the firmware on the DRU-500A.

After the firmware update the DRU-500a burns at 4x speed to so what is changed on the new drive?
