I installed gta3 with a crack (gta3.exe) and it worked great.
That was on my old system running win98. I just built a new system and have winXp running on it. I tried installing gta3 the same way I did on my old system. The installation goes fine and I swap the gta3.exe file. Then when the game starts loading I notice that I can't read any of the text (menu text). It's just big empty blocks. I remembered which "blocks" were to start a new game and the game starts up and again I can't read the text in the game (the "subtitles" in the intro for example). Any ideas? any help is appreciated. ...tanlin999 |

Next time please do a bit of research. This is a known problem in Windows XP. Have you installed the 1.1 patch ?

I actually did search back a few pages for any thread about gta3 and didn't see anything about the xp issue.
Guess I should've used the search feature. Sorry about that... and thanks for the help! |

G'day tanlin999,
You just havent read back far enough...... it was covered In This Thread Over Here & a link was provided (which still works) which is simply a microsoft update for a d3d8.dll file, which fixes the text problem. If you read the "read me" in the GTA3 game it explains it there.....
