You ARE talking about the first GTA, right ? That's a bit old, which one of these GTA 1 nocd's have you tried ? There are four cracks there, don't tell me they all don't work.

I tried all 4 of those patches, and within each download there were 4 files, but all had a slightly different name to what's already on my hard drive. I tried replacing the similarly named files with the new ones, but had no luck. Is there another site where i can get patches. GTA 1 is what i'm taliking about

No, those four are what's available. Now are you SURE the game is GTA 1, NOT GTA London 1969, GTA II or GTA III ? And if it's GTA1, what is the name of the executable that you run to start the game ? There are 8-bit, 24-bit and 3dfx versions of the executable.

This is all there is. And it WILL work. The problem is that they're all patches, which means you have to run the correct one to change your executable. As I said, there's a 8-bit, 24-bit, windows and a 3DFX version. That's why some cracks contain 4 different patches. I've got to determine which one you've got.

So, does it run in DOS or windows ? Have you got a 3dfx card ? Better still, give me the exact names of all executables in the GTA directory, so every file ending on .exe. One of these patches is bound to work but we'll first have to make sure exactly which version you're running.

Now we're getting somewhere. Which OS are you trying to run it under ? I take it some kind of Windows version, then you're supposed to use the windows version crack. But the 3dfx version uses a 3dfx card to make the game look a lot nicer. I don't know whether that will run under Windows though and you probably don't have a 3dfx card so that would require a Glide emulator. I think we better use the windows version. First, copy the "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" to a safe place, since we're going to change it and we need a backup just in case.

Let's try the first crack, this should be "GTACDCRK.ZIP", I take it you've already downloaded it ? In there is a "gtaw-c.exe", extract that file to the gtawin directory, so it's in the same directory as "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE". Now run that "gtaw-c.exe". Hopefully it'll report that the patch succeeded, if anything went wrong tell me what the programs says. If it succeeds, try "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" and see if it works.

Try all this and with a bit of luck it'll solve it, otherwise we'll try something else.

Woah Woah Woah, long shot but I have the Freeloader version of the game. Hal, Wanna test the exe (NoCD!) from that release with the release you are working with? No gurantees it will work though, just a suggestion. Reply with an Email address if interested.

Rince, I tried what you said. However I didn't get any messages when I ran the GTAW-C.exe file. Was I supposed to delete GRAND THEFT AUTO.exe form the gtawin folder after creating a backup? When I run the game, I still get the message telling me to insert the CD. What am I doing wrong? I take it that the name of the downloaded file (GTAW-C.exe) makes no difference. Perhaps we should try something else.

Have you followed my instructions ? Make sure that you put the gtaw-c.exe in the gtawin directory and run it there. This will patch "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE", in other words it will change a few bytes in that executable so it becomes a nocd crack. I asked you to copy that "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" to another directory first because if we want to try other patches we need that unchanged executable. Now if you did patch the correct executable, you should run that and it should work. DO NOT run the "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" that was copied to another place. If you did all this exactly and it didn't work, THEN we need to copy the backup "GRAND THEFT AUTO.EXE" back to the gtawin directory and try another patch. I'm sorry, but ALL these patches work. You just need to apply them in the right way. Maybe the executable changed for the freeloader version, do you have that one, or did you buy GTA in a store ?

Hey guys, there _definitely_ is some kind of a re-release of the first Grand Theft Auto! I know because I created a no-CD patch for it already. If I remember correctly, the difference is that it has the "ASC Games" logo on the lower left corner of the main menu screen, instead of the "DMA" logo...?! (Sorry, can't check it out right now, don't have any games at work... )

I think I still have the no-CD patch for this re-release. While I carry it to work, Hal, please, check it if it _really_ is this re-release that you have. Bye,

Joe
