Backing up DVD MOVIES

I Have just got a DVD-RW but when i tried to copy a DVD on the fly it said this could not be done. The DVD-RW is the HP3000 and something or other and i don't know if its a software conflict or drive problem. Any sort of RW program that would help solve this would be most cool
