editing ripped video

I've used smartripper to rip a couple chapters out of various dvds, and I now have the *.vob files and whatnot. I'm wondering if someone could possibly direct me to a program in which I could edit these existing files (this would be preferable) or a program in which I could convert the files I have now to a more easily edited format such as mpeg or avi.
