cd/rw wont work

hi,i have a ricoh mp9060a last time i used it, it worked now it does not. it say medium error when using clone cd but they are the same discs i always use.
also when i try to erase my rewritable disc the pc goes through the sequence of erasing the disc but when you check it after it has not been erased. could this mean the laser is buggered or could it be something else.
