"swap trick"

Ok I think all this time I have been confused with this so-called "swap trick"
Is doing the swap trick not the same as using a GS/AR2/DVDX to boot with then swap for game backup?
Is the swap trick infact just using a compatible game to boot then swapping with say an import game etc (with use of a chip like origa for example).
If this is infact correct I will become alot more clearer on some of my other foolish questions .
