I have a problem with this game and need suggestions.

I have backed up the game and it will get as far as checking the memory card and will not run any further, just leaves me with a black screen.

Anyone got any tips how to solve this?

You could try other boot methods check out

If this doesn't resolve your problem the copy may be a duffer.
Try copying it again using different writing software.
