PLAYSTATION 2 FOR PLAYING DVD'S- Whats it like?

Have managed to convince my flatmates to purchase a PS2 over an ordinary DVD player which they were intending to purchase due to the advantage of playing games on it! I remember reading some bad reports about the use of it for DVD's upon its launch with picture quality, etc. Is this true? Also what cables are required, remote controls, etc. Any help or opinions would be appreciated, cheers.
