idiots guide to backing up

could anyone please give me any tips about copying half life-blue shift.i use clonecd and have tried using the patch from GCW (not even sure if i am using the patch correctly).i have a dvd drive and a cd-rw drive but is it better to copy it to the hard drive? if so how do you do that with clonecd....any other tips would be much appreciated.sorry if i am asking a lot but only had the cd-rw about a week.
