Enhanced PS1 Games on PS2?

Im pretty sure i've read something a while back when the ps2 was up for release that it would in some way play ps1 games, but with some enhanced features? ne1 have any info on this?

I'm now a happy owner of a ps2, and have tested all my ps1 games, but i see no traces of enhancements. well, increased fps is the only thing... but i was hoping for some resolution changes, or texture features...

In the setup menu of the PS2, you can alter texture smoothness... what's up with that? also, turning diagnostics on or off doesen't seems to do a thing. ne1 know?

I noticed the texture smoothing in the battle sequences and world map of FF9, you dont notice the ugly pixels present in textures.
Also notice that you have to enable the "Texture Smoothing" feature everytime you turn the PS2 on.
